LDO linear voltage regulator claims lowest noise

Texas Instruments Inc. unveils the 1-A TPS7A4700 LDO linear regulator. Described as a high current, ultra-low noise LDO, the voltage regulator is said to produce less than 4.17µVrms output noise over the 10Hz to 100kHz bandwidth. This cuts the need for filtering in telecom, industrial, RF, medical, avionics and military applications, reducing both their size and cost.

The LDO enables the setting of any output voltage rail in 100mV increments with simple PCB layout changes. This makes expensive, high accuracy, external feedback resistors, unnecessary, and further shrinks board area and component count compared to existing solutions. It also lets users program the output voltage by selecting to either ground or open the binary-weighted device pins using digital control methods such as I2C or PMBus.

For systems where both positive and negative voltage rails are required, the TPS7A4700 can be used together with TI's -36V/-1A TPS7A3301 LDO linear regulator.

The regulator's wide bandwidth and high PSR are said to allow effective filtering of DC/DC switching supplies running at higher frequencies. Also, its 36V input voltage rating allows use in systems running 12V and 24V buses with enough headroom to withstand high-voltage transients, eliminating the need for additional suppression circuitry.

The TPS7A4700 is available in volume now in a 20-pin, 5mm by 5mm QFN package, priced at Rs.114.75 ($2.10) in 1,000-unit quantities.
