16-channel converters supply up to 14V output

The fully integrated devices have all the required bias ranges for coherent optical systems of medium- to long-haul, fibre-based telecommunication deployments, according to Analog Devices.

Analog Devices has introduced a pair of 16-channel digital-to-analog converters, which it claims will significantly reduce the system footprint for wired telecommunications systems.

The 12-bit AD5767 and 16-bit AD5766 are fully integrated devices with all the required bias ranges for coherent optical systems of medium- to long-haul, fibre-based telecommunication deployments, according to the company. Both ICs integrate a wide array of discrete components to provide the required voltage ranges and additional system functionality in a very small area.

The D/A converters are suited for optical modules and electro-optical functions such as bias control, including Mach-Zehnder modulator-bias control.

The converters are available in both 4mm x 4mm WLCSP and 6mm x 6mm LFCSP packages. They provide a range of unipolar or bipolar output voltages from the user-supplied 2.5V reference; these outputs can be adjusted from −20V to 14V. The output buffers can sink or source up to 20mA, and the D/A converter can impose low-frequency dithering on these outputs if needed, thus eliminating the need for external circuitry. An integrated output multiplexer allows each of the 16 channels to be monitored, according to the company.

The pin- and footprint-compatible AD5766 is functionally identical to the AD5767, but with 16-bit performance for applications which require the additional resolution. The AD5767 and AD5766 use a versatile 4-wire serial interface that operates at clock rates of up to 50MHz for write mode, and is compatible with serial peripheral interface (SPI), QSPI, Microwire and DSP interface standards.

The ICs operate over the -40°C to 105°C range for additional versatility, according to Analog Devices.
