From January 2022 to December 2022, approximately 13,956MW solar capacity and 1,847MW of wind capacity was added in India.
From January 2022 to December 2022, approximately 13,956MW solar capacity and 1,847MW of wind capacity was added in India. This is about 17.5% and 26.6%, respectively, higher compared to 2021, according to JMK Research.
In terms of cumulative installations, according to the data released by Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), India’s RE installation capacity reached 120.85GW by December 2022. Solar energy contributes for approximately 52% share in the total RE segment, making it the major contributor followed by wind energy (35%), bio power (9%) and small hydro (4%). Share of solar has increased by 5 percentage points in last one year.

Note: Solar capacity includes utility scale solar, rooftop solar, and off-grid/ distributed solar capacity
From January-December 2022, about 11.3GW of new utility-scale solar capacity was added in India, up by 47% compared with the January-December 2021 period.
In the rooftop solar segment, about 1.9GW is added in the last 12 months, this is about 42% lesser than 2021 installations. While in off-grid/ distributed solar segment, nearly 700MW was added which is about 50% lesser than 2021 installations.

In wind sector, about 1.85GW of new capacity was added during Jan-Dec 2022, which is 26% higher than 1.46GW capacity added during January-December 2021.
In terms of state wise installations, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu were the leading states with most of the large-scale solar installations in 2022. While Gujarat led the installations with the commissioning of more than 1,600MW of new wind projects in this period.
